The want to have a beautiful yard is on the wishlist of homeowners everywhere, but that doesn’t mean that we all have the time, effort, energy, or knowledge to make that happen. These simple perennial tips and ideas can help your yard be the star of the show this year – all you have to do is educate yourself and put your plan into action.

What kind of plant comes back every year?

Before assuming that everyone reading this knows the difference, let’s make it clear. If you’re looking for a plant that will come back on its own, year after year, then you’re going to want to invest in perennials for your outdoor space and yard.

Annuals are plants that have to be replanted every year unless they are able to have some of their seeds fall into the soil and begin the process of germination. (Most times, they die out and have to be replanted.)

Another thing – there are some plants that are perennials in certain hardiness zones and annuals in others. So always check your planting zone before you buy and plant.

How do I make my garden and yard low maintenance?

The simple answer is that you make it to where it comes almost take care of itself. This means that you can fill your spaces with plants that once bloomed, will continue to do the same thing every year as well.

There are actually a lot of low maintenance perennials that you can easily fill your flower beds and garden area with!

What are the easiest outdoor plants?

Let’s just jump right into it. If you’re looking for outdoor plants that can thrive and survive on their own, the easiest outdoor plant that you could possibly have is the geranium. As long as they have sunlight, they’re going to live a good and healthy life.

Just make certain you’re purchasing the perennial type (cranesbill geranium) because there are a lot of them that are actually annual plants out there.

But guess what? There’s a long list of easy outdoor plants that you can easily grow yourself. Let’s dive into the rest of the list below.

 Low Maintenance Perennials

Dreaming of a beautiful yard where you don’t have to spend hours daily doesn’t have to be just a “dream”. In fact, if you do your research for your planting zones and find easy perennial plants to grow, after a year or two you just might have an outdoor space or backyard area that you don’t even have to give a second thought to.

Which low maintenance perennials grow in shade?

So what happens if your yard or outdoor space just doesn’t have a ton of sunlight? Not everyone can have a house that faces the sun, we totally get that. There just so happens to be a long list of perennials that you can grow in shade, and here are some of the top ones to consider:

Viola

Viola flowers
  • Viola still needs a few hours of sunshine daily but can survive in far less than others.
  • They are edible flowers
  • Viola come in shades of almost every color including yellow, purple, pink, white, lavender, even nearly black

Ferns

Fern
  • Ferns thrive in areas of shade.
  • There are many varieties, including ferns that are perfect for containers

Toad Lily

  • These are lilies that are actually quite beautiful and speckled like the back of a toad.
  • Toad lilies need adequate moisture and will not survive in drought conditions so as long as you plant in the right place, they can be a great low maintenance perennial.

Sedum

Sedum - a drought tolerant low-maintenance perennial
  • Sedum is an amazing low maintenance perennial that I’ve found to be super easy to grow
  • You can grow sedum in pots, in containers, or even transplant a cutting to the ground and they return year after year with very little care.
  • They have low growing varieties or tall growing and produce thick stems with clusters of dense pinkish-purple flowers.

You can easily grow shrubs and flowers without having to worry about the challenges of not receiving too much sun.

How do you arrange a perennial flower bed?

If you’re envisioning your outdoor space to have several flower beds full of perennial flowers, you can easily make that happen! You just need to make certain that you’re choosing flowers that will bloom at different times so you can extend the longevity of your flower bed’s blooming life.

If you live in a climate where plants can grow all year, there’s a strong possibility that you can create your flower bed to have beautiful and varying flowers possibly all-year long.

The best way to know what to plant is to know your planting zones and check the bloom times on what you’re planting.

What kind of perennials bloom all summer?

Is it possible to have a plant bloom and be beautiful all summer long? If you plant some of these summer flowers, there’s a really great chance that it will happen!

Not only is lavender beautiful to look at but it smells great, too! You’ll great a long-lasting plant and one that makes your yard have a pleasant scent as well with this beautiful option.

And if you’re trying to draw in some more butterflies to your space, lavender can help with that, too.

Another plus to planting lavender is that it’s a great container plant as well and can handle full sun.

Shasta Daisy

Everyone loves daisies. What’s not to love? They’re the cutest flower that makes great additions to birthdays, weddings, or just in a vase in the center of your table. Some of them can actually grow pretty tall so keep that in mind when you plant them.

Shasta daisies are also super easy to grow and you can find them at any home improvement or garden center. I’ve planted several of these and they are truly low maintenance perennials that return year after year.

What is one of the longest blooming perennials?

Coreopsis

Coreopsis flowers - a low maintenance perennial flower

While there are many, the one I’m going to recommend is Coreopsis, also known as “tickseed”. Its season of life can actually be over several months-long so the earlier in the summer you decide to plant and bloom, the longer chance that it will last into the early part of fall.

The plant is available in varieties of yellow, orange, red, and pink. They can also tolerate partial shade, but thrive in full sun.

Now that you know a little bit about low maintenance perennials, it’s time to take the matter into your own hands and make your dream outdoor space into a beautiful place that you’re proud to show off.

While you’ll have to have a little bit of gardening and planting skills for these types of plants, it isn’t anything that is going to be too hard for you to complete!

Just make certain that you read the requirements for water, shade, and/or sunlight before purchasing so that you’re giving yourself the best bet for success right out of the gate.
