I mentioned to my kids that I was considering getting new stockings this year and let’s just say you would think I suggested we change the date of Christmas! Who knew it was such a big deal? If we had gorgeous handmade stockings that were super sentimental, I might understand, but nope. Target specials from several years ago. Needless to say, the Target specials are still gracing my mantel as we speak. So fine. Not to be outdone, I decided to enlist the help of my super talented cousin to make some stockings for me and hang them in their own special part of the house! And to make them personalized stockings – they needed initials so I added some cute little DIY stocking tags in no time!

Matching Family Pajamas for Christmas
I’m fairly crafty, or at least I try, but I have my limits. And sewing is one skill I do not possess. I wish I did – I never learned past sewing a button. I ventured into drafting class instead of Home Ec in high school. However, my cousin is a sewing genius. For example, I needed a dress altered recently. I put it on for her. She eyeballed the measurements and returned it to me in a few hours fitting like a glove. Seriously. Who does that?
So anyway, I knew she’d be the perfect person to make some stockings. And they are fabulous and go perfectly in my neutral Christmas dining room. But they needed an initial or a tag so Santa will know which one is which. I am done spending money on decor this year and I had all the supplies on hand, so I made my own!
Personalized Stockings – DIY Stocking Tags
- Wooden tags like these
- Wood Burning Tool
- Twine
- Stencils
- Stockings (similar ones found here)
- Or ticking fabric to make your own (like this)
I stenciled each initial onto the tag with a pencil and then used the wood-burning tool to trace it. It’s not as easy as it looks and I’ve only used it a handful of times, so I’m definitely a beginner. They are not perfect by any means, but I’m ok with that. If I wait on everything to be perfect, it’ll never get done!
I used the twine to tie it to my stocking and hung them in the dining room. A simple DIY that only takes about 30 minutes! And now everyone is happy. The kiddos have their sentimental Tar-jay specials (forever apparently) and I have some personalized farmhouse style stockings!
Anyone else have a fun DIY for Christmas this year? Or kids that won’t change stockings??
Wishing you lots of love and cheer for this holiday season! Merry Christmas and thanks for following along!

I didn't even know you could get wooden tags! I have been dying to try a wood burning tool and just haven't taken the plunge. I just love these though. I need to do it. Great tutorial by the way! I love the personalized look it gives the stockings;)

Thanks Wendy! You need to get one!! It's a learning curve for sure, but it's just so cool what you can do with it! And those tags are so inexpensive and great for crafting!

I love these! Does your cousin sell her stockings? Cause I need some too? Also, I might just have to ask my husband for a last minute gift because I'm loving all you are creating with that wood burning tool!
